A Shantui SD22 crawler bulldozer weighing 23,450 kg. The engine is either a Cummins NT855-C280S10 or a Weichai WP12G240E306, rated at 162 kW (220 hp) net and 175 kW gross.
The blade ranges from 4.6 to 7.5 m³ depending on type. Track shoes come at 560, 610 or 660 mm, and ground clearance is 405 mm. The machine in our photographs carries a three-shank ripper. Overall it is 6.06 × 4.20 × 3.402 m, which is 87 m³ on the vessel.
Mining. Pushing overburden, building and maintaining benches and ramps, cleaning up around loading faces, and pushing ore to the loader.
Quarrying. Ripping soft and fractured rock so it can be pushed and loaded without blasting.
Dams and embankments. Spreading and pushing large volumes of fill, layer after layer.
Heavy road construction. Cutting through hills and hard ground on new road alignments, and pushing the cut to where the fill is needed.
A dozer’s working power comes from two things: weight and horsepower. Weight keeps the tracks gripping and the blade in the ground. Horsepower keeps it moving under load. The SD22 has both, which is why it works where a lighter dozer simply stops.
The ripper. Three shanks at the rear break up rock, hardpan and compacted ground ahead of the blade. On many quarries and road cuts, a dozer with a good ripper replaces a great deal of drilling and blasting, which saves money, explosives permits and time.
The Cummins NT855. When the SD22 carries the Cummins engine, it carries one of the most familiar heavy diesels in Africa. Mechanics in almost every mining region know it, and parts are easy to find.
Shantui. The SD22 is the heavier of our two Shantui dozers, built on a design that goes back to the Komatsu technology licence. It is a familiar machine on African mines and road contracts.
Wide shoes for soft ground. The 660 mm shoes spread 23 tonnes over a larger area for work on wet fill and soft clay. The 560 mm shoes are for rock and hard ground.
Through our own workshop before it loads, with every stage photographed.
The undercarriage. On a dozer that works rock, this is the part that costs the most. Ask for the wear on the track links, the rollers and the sprockets.
The ripper. Ask for photographs of the shank tips and the ripper frame mountings. Cracks there show a machine that has been worked hard.
The engine and the torque converter. Ask for a video of the machine pushing a full blade. A weak engine or a slipping converter shows immediately.
87 m³, calculated from the dimensions. At 4.20 m wide with the blade fitted, it moves by road as a wide load on a heavy low-bed. Loaded at our yard in Tangshan, shipped through Tianjin Port.
The work: mining, quarry, dam or road. The ground and whether you need to rip. The blade type you want. Your destination port and the quantity.
The SD22 weighs about 23.5 tonnes against the SD16's 16 to 17, and carries a blade up to 7.5 m³ against 4.8. Choose the SD22 for mines, quarries, dams and heavy road cuts through hard ground. Choose the SD16 for land clearing, farm work and lighter road formation.
The SD22 is built with either a Cummins NT855-C280S10 or a Weichai WP12G240E306. The Cummins NT855 is one of the best-known heavy diesel engines in Africa and has powered dozers and generators there for decades. We confirm which engine the machine carries and send the plate.
Gross power, 175 kW, is what the engine makes on a test bench. Net power, 162 kW or 220 hp, is what is left after the fan, the alternator and the other accessories take their share. Net is the figure that pushes the blade, which is why it is the one to compare.
405 mm. It matters on rough ground, where a dozer with low clearance hangs up on rocks and stumps between its tracks.
Only what the catalogue actually prints. A row that is not here is a figure we do not have yet. Ask, and we confirm it against the machine in our yard rather than guess at it.
Sea freight is charged on volume, not weight. This one occupies 87 m³. Loaded at Tangshan City, Hebei, shipped through Tianjin Port. What CBM does to your bill → Where we ship from →
